3 Tell-Tale Signs It's Time to Replace That Garage Door

3 Tell-Tale Signs It's Time to Replace That Garage Door

by VersaTube on January 25, 2019

It’s there when you need it to stand strong while protecting your vehicle and belongings from the worst of the elements. Ah, the oft forgotten garage door. Most homeowners let it fall to the bottom of their home repair to-do list. Some let it fall into absolute, unforgivable disrepair. Unforgivable because the garage door is likely the largest and highest traffic entrance to your home. This means it is important to keep in good condition, functional and safe!

Don’t forget that your garage door is usually one of the aspects of your home that people view. In other words, a good looking garage door might help (or hinder) your home’s market value.

Your garage door may or may not need to be replaced. Ultimately, whether or not you need to repair, replace or fix aspects of your garage door will depend on the situation. Do you use your garage door often? Do you live in an environment with harsh weather? Has your teenager crashed into it and damaged the exterior?

Here are 3 signs that it’s time for you to replace your garage door:

  1. Loud Noises - your garage door should function smoothly. Opening and closing quietly is a sign that your door is working properly. If your door is noisy or struggles to open and close, it’s probably time to consider maintenance or replacement. Consider investigating strange noises to determine if they stem from the following: broken springs, broken cables, loose hinges, rust-covered rollers, worn down shaft bearings or uneven door tension.

  1. Overdue for an Update - when was the last time your updated your garage? An obsolete or outdated garage door can malfunction (which could lead to damage issues that lead to security risks). An outdated garage door can also hurt your home’s market value and create a look of disrepair. Not only will an updated garage door help your home look more attractive, but it will likely come with better safety measures which will keep your home, family and belongings safer.

  2. Damage - if there is any visible damage such as bent metal sections, splintered wood, loose or missing panels, crooked panels, rotting wood, broken hinges or unevenness, it’s time to do something about your garage door. Some models, especially new models, allow homeowners to replace sections of the garage door. However, older models usually require for the entire door to be replaced if it’s too damaged. Replacement is immensely important for guarding against would-be intruders and pests.

It’s important to understand when it’s time to fix or replace your door. If any of the above signs have manifested, or if you haven’t updated your garage in quite some time, you may want to have your door examined by a professional to decide if your garage door requires repair or replacement.
