5 Ways to Share Your Hobbies with Your Kids

by VersaTube on April 01, 2019

At VersaTube we value our families above all else, especially our children. We’ve learned that one of the best ways to build a child’s confidence and self-worth is to spend time together doing something that you both enjoy. Sharing a fun activity or hobby is paramount to your relationship with your kids. It tells your children that you are invested in them and that they’re worthwhile. Not only that, but it’s a powerful tool for bonding, building trust and communication!

Sharing your hobbies with your kids teaches them that learning something new can be fun and exciting. It also shows them that it’s okay to make mistakes and try again, which builds a strong work ethic and teamwork skills - all very important life lessons.

If you don’t have a regular hobby, here are five things to try that you’re both likely to enjoy!

Sports

Many kids become interested in sports by first playing them with their parents. Try out different outdoor spots to see which ones stoke your child’s interest. More than likely your child will model your level of excitement, so try to be enthusiastic, and keep things light-hearted and fun.

Studies show that children in sports have healthier lives and develop key skills like problem solving and critical thinking. Some sports-related ideas include:

  • Neighborhood bike rides

  • Playing catch

  • Playing basketball

  • Hiking

  • Kayaking

  • Boating.

Crafts

Crafts are an easy way to build children’s confidence and creativity. Your might even find your child has an affinity for art! With a child-safe workshop or garage, you can come up with all sorts of home craft projects. If you’re a bit of a DIYer yourself, don’t hesitate to share your passion with your kids - passion can be contagious!

Some crafts-related ideas are:

  • Watercolor painting

  • Jewelry making

  • Holiday-related card making

  • Paper cutouts

  • Woodworking

  • Paper lanterns.

Reading

Reading out loud to children is a fun way to get them interested in reading while encouraging them to build their literacy skills. Not only is reading a brain-healthy hobby, but it can help kids to develop a love for reading.

Build their imaginations by reading them fictional stories, especially fantasy, folklore and myths. This could take them down a path in a creative field such as writing. Create a cozy reading nook for your child and encourage him or her to read independently, too.

Make-Believe

Playing make-believe with children can grow their ability to think outside the box, interact in social settings and strengthen their creativity. If you have hobbies that require some imagination, you can use this as an opportunity to share that with your kids. If you’re unsure, try out different activities that can help your kids become vested in new areas of interest.

Some make-believe activities can include:

  • Playing charades

  • Role-play

  • Putting on a play

  • Taking turns telling a story

  • Creating a business

  • Putting on a concert.

Music

If you know how to sing or play an instrument, this is a perfect hobby to share with your kids! Find somewhere quiet for this activity. Ideally, look for a spot in your home where you’re less likely to get a noise complaint, somewhere like a garage or sound-proof area should do. Then, play your instrument or sing and encourage your kids to follow along! If they really enjoy it, you can put on a show together for other family members and friends.

By letting your children get involved in your creative process, you lead them into the world of music and by extension, exercise their brains! Studies show that music can reduce anxiety, improve mood, memory and sleep. Awesome stuff, right?
