Five things to think about before hiring a contractor

by Stacy Fender on August 16, 2018

VersaTube pre-engineered steel buildings are known for being easy to construct, thanks in part to our Slip-Fit Technology. But many buildings, especially those that are larger, are best tackled by more than one person - and whether for convenience or personal lack of construction experience - it’s not uncommon for VersaTube customers to hire a professional general contractor to oversee the complete construction of their building.

If this is the path you’re thinking about taking, we have five tips for your consideration before you choose the contractor you’ll be working with:

1. Do some research. Get recommendations from your friends and family members, and check out the work these contractors did on their behalf if at all possible. Look at online reviews of contractors, too.

2. Get a few bids, and negotiate to get the best price for the work you want done. Contractors know they’re unlikely to be the only one competing for the job. Look for someone with experience with steel buildings.

3. That said, don’t necessarily pick the cheapest option - that contractor may not be the best value. You also don’t want to hire anyone who wants to just work for cash, wants to use leftover material from another job, or is pressuring you to make a decision. These can be signs of a scam.

4. Make sure you understand your contract. If your state doesn’t require contractors to provide a written agreement, ask for one anyway. Be sure you both agree on and sign off on each individual expense in the contract, and that you get a detailed list of warranties, materials, and workmanship. Having everything spelled out and signed off on by both parties will prevent any confusion later.

5. Remember to keep records. Take notes of conversations you have with your contractor about decisions made during the project. Take before, during and after photos. It’s just another step to preventing miscommunication and making sure you get the pre-engineered steel building you want.
