Pros and Cons to a Concrete Driveway

by VersaTube Marketing on September 11, 2019

When it comes to constructing a VersaTube building, like a garage or a workshop, there’s a variety of decisions to make when preparing for the build. One of them is choosing whether or not you want to install a concrete driveway.

Installing a concrete driveway, like anything else, has its pros and cons. It’s important to weigh the drawbacks and benefits side-by-side before adding a concrete driveway to your property because if you make a hasty decision, there could be even more drawbacks than benefits. Here are some pros and cons you need to consider when it comes to concrete driveways:

Pros

Installing a concrete driveway to your home or business can be a real game-changer. Not only can they clean up the overall look and feel to your property, but it can also offer an ease of life that you don’t get with a dirt driveway. Here are some of the many benefits to pouring a concrete driveway, including:

• If your VersaTube building is for your business, a concrete driveway may make it easier for customers and clients to get to your building

• Can make your home or business more visually appealing

• Is fairly versatile and customizable - it can be stamped with a design or stained a color that you like

• Your vehicles won’t get stuck in the mud, or get covered in it for that matter - and neither will you

• Less damage to your tires

• Sturdy and durable - if installed correctly, it can last up to 50 years or more

• Low maintenance - again, if installed correctly

• It’ll be easier to deliver your VersaTube DIY frame kits to you

When installed correctly, a concrete driveway can make driving up to your home or business a smooth ride, so it may be worth the investment.

Cons

Many of the cons of having a concrete driveway come down to one thing: bad installation.

Depending on how large the project is and how much experience you have, pouring a concrete driveway is not the easiest DIY project. If you are inexperienced and don’t get the right kind of help, you risk doing it completely wrong, and you’ll likely end up with a concrete driveway that is simply not going to last. This will do more damage than good. Hiring a professional to do the work may be a better route to go for those who are inexperienced, but that can be expensive. In the long run, though, you’re going to save more money doing it the correct way.

While concrete is a strong and sturdy material to work with, it does require some maintenance and upkeep, even when done by professionals. Low-maintenance doesn’t mean no-maintenance, and if you don’t take the steps to take care of your concrete driveway, you’re going to end up with a host of problems, like:

• Repairing cracks and other damages more often, like potholes

• If repairs are needed, concrete can’t be patched. The broken section has to be removed and a new slab needs to be poured

• Weeds growing up between slabs and cracks

• Constantly clearing it of debris tracked in by vehicles, like rocks and dirt

• Oils and other fluids from vehicles leaking and staining the concrete

These problems can be avoided by ensuring that it is correctly installed, providing careful weekly maintenance, and sealing your concrete driveway yearly in the fall to further protect it from damage.

Ultimately, deciding whether to have a concrete driveway or not comes down to if you’re willing to take the extra step to ensure that it’s installed correctly and are willing to do the low amount of maintenance it takes to keep it nice. If installed right, a concrete driveway can last for many years to come. It’ll really benefit your property by allowing easy access and visual appeal to your VersaTube garage and building. If it seems like a good investment for your home or business, it may be worth the time and expense.
