How to Design Your Own VersaTube Workshop

How to Design Your Own VersaTube Workshop

by VersaTube on February 06, 2019

Remember Grandpa’s old workshop? As much as you might cherish the nostalgia of dust hanging in the air, or the spiderwebs and hidden treasure trove of “ancient” relics from the past … modern workshops are growing in popularity. And for good reason! At VersaTube, our Workshop Building Kits are practical, simple to maintain and customizable. Regardless of what you plan to use it for, designing your own workshop has never been easier!

Ready to design your first VersaTube Workshop Kit? Here’s how you can get started!

Budget. Before you start with anything, you should know roughly what kind of budget you’re working with. In addition to the cost of your building kit, you’ll need to consider whether you will contract out help, if there are any additional fees required for a permit and the cost of the raw materials such as nails, tools and concrete.

Size. The size of your workshop should be taken into account before you begin the design process. Ask yourself: how much space will I need outside AND inside of the workshop?

Another important factor is the the ceiling height, which will depend on what you want to do with your workshop. You’ll want to think ahead about how much working space you’ll need. For a workshop/office, you will need to consider the size of your desk, furniture and any additional storage. For a workshop where you plan to build or create DIY projects, you’ll want enough space for work room, tools and storage. Whatever you plan, make sure your workshop is big enough to accommodate you!

Now for a little math. Since your structure will likely be in a rectangle or square shape, you can use this formula to get the area required for your workshop: Length x Width = Area. Next, divide your area by the size of the furniture or space that will be taken over by storage. This will let you know whether your structure is too big or small.

We recommend that where overall floorspace is concerned, your workshop should be 11 ½ feet wide and 20 feet deep. If you have a lot of furniture or additions that will take up space, remember to add consider that!

Pro tip: always leave additional space outside surrounding the workshop, too.

Design. So, you’ve calculated the ideal size for your workshop. Now it’s time to get to the fun stuff!

Visit the Design Your Own page on our site. You can custom design your structure from there. Or, if you’d like to keep things simple you can choose a Standard Garage Building Kit. The kit allows you to choose from several options, including whether you want an open or fully enclosed frame, dimensions, sheet metal positioning, specific color combinations and more.

Custom-made. Customizing your VersaTube workshop can be a lot of fun! The 9-step process on our site is easy to understand and straight forward. Here is a rundown of our process:

  1. Enter your zipcode into the first field. This allows us to better customize your structure to meet your local wind and snow load expectations.

  2. Using your calculations, select your frame dimensions. You will be asked to input the width, length and height.

  3. Now, choose your frame options. There are two framing choices: frame only or fully enclosed. Additionally, this step allows you to pick your side sheet metal style.

  4. Add garage door openings, walk door openings or window openings.

  5. Next, decide whether you’d like to add insulation. You can further customize this option by choosing what kind of insulation is appropriate for your structure.

  6. Choose your colors!

  7. Answer how you will anchor your structure: to the ground or concrete?

  8. Answer whether this project will require certified stamped drawings and calculations.

  9. Decide how you’d like your kit delivered.

That’s it!

Designing your own VersaTube workshop is simple, and allows you to create a space that’s perfect for your needs. And once your kit arrives - you can have your workshop put together in just a couple of days!
