Maximizing the True Potential of Your Garage

by VersaTube on December 31, 2018

Your garage is more important than you know. It’s not just a place to store boxes and forgotten knickknacks. It’s not just a place to horde your old vinyl collection. In fact, the garage is a valuable addition to any home. Homeowners who invest in their garages tend to recover the most money when they put their homes on the market.

To fully maximize your garage’s potential and to increase the value of your property, you may want to examine the following tactics:

Organization

The first step to getting the most out of your garage is to start organizing it. If you’re like most homeowners, your garage is likely filled to the brim with old decor, tools and equipment. To assist with the decluttering process, remove any things that you don’t use or need anymore (hold the nostalgic items until the end, when you can decide whether they’re worth keeping or selling).

Finally, start organizing by investing in an organizational system. Organizational systems can include wall-mounted organizers such as pegboard walls, utility carts, cabinets and storage bins.

After developing your organizational system, begin sifting through the items that you’ve chosen to keep. Remember to evaluate your nostalgic objects, some of which may be worth keeping while others can be sold or dontated.

Purpose

After fully organizing and decluttering your garage, it’s time to consider what to do with any leftover space. Large spaces can easily be converted into entertainment centers or workshops. Some people let their creativity shine and turn their newly organized garage into game rooms, man caves, gyms and offices.

Another way to determine how to make full use of your garage is to ask yourself what would make life easier. For some, a mudroom is the answer to their daily struggle of muddy, sandy or dusty shoes tracking dirt and debris into the house. Garages are basically built for high foot traffic, and are very easy to clean (unlike carpeting). Throw some additional storage in the mudroom for shoes and keep your living space sparkling clean.

General Upgrades

The importance of basic upgrades should not be forgotten! A number of upgrades will add considerably to the value of your garage, which in turn, should increase your property value. One major upgrade that every garage needs is an insulated garage door, which helps control extreme temperature fluctuations up to 30 degrees Fahrenheit.

Additional upgrades worth mentioning include repainting your garage, adding windows, unconventional door materials (steel, refurbished wood, fiberglass, vinyl and more) and adding built-in storage.

Tech it Up

In an increasingly technological world, a high-tech garage is the answer to simplifying your life. Too many people don’t realize that in addition to their home, they can bring artificial intelligence into their garage. Smart homes are extremely popular now, so why not garages? You can connect a smart garage door opener to your home wifi which can give you control over your door with your smartphone. Other smart garage features include:

  • Check on your garage door remotely from your phone or computer

  • Receive alerts whenever the garage door opens or closes

  • Automated lights

  • Automated temperature control

  • Seamless audio transition from car to garage.

Safety First

Garages are often prime targets for thieves. The best way to combat them is to install a smart security system to alert emergency services for dispatch if someone attempts to break-in from the garage.

If your security system doesn’t come with them, install motion detector lights. They’ll turn on whenever they sense something that doesn’t belong, and will only shut off when there’s no motion.

Additionally, any windows should be covered. Blinds or curtains are cost-effective and do a good job of keeping burglars “in the dark” about your garage interior. Opaque window stickers also work well to keep others from looking in.

Finally, secure your garage door with a smart lock system and a timer. You can set a timer that signals your garage door opener to close after a set amount of seconds or minutes.
