3 Ways to keep your outside pets safe this winter

by VersaTube Marketing on November 15, 2019

Whether your outdoor pets are livestock who help you make a living or pets that protect your property, they must be cared for during the winter months. Here we have listed three easy ways to keep your pets safe in treacherous weather.

Provide Shelter

Protecting your outside pets from extreme temperatures is easy if you provide them with adequate shelter. VersaTube offers a wide range of sheds, barns, and stables designed to do just that. If you don’t have the space for a large horse barn, you may prefer a loafing shed. Designed as a combination between a storage shed and a stable, a loafing shed is the perfect place for housing livestock. These durable sheds are built to resist weathering and termites. Coming in a selection of sizes, loafing sheds provide both shelter and storage for any livestock, from cows to goats. The loafing shed features a high slant that keeps rain and snow away from the opening. The additional storage space is a great place to store food or straw for bedding.

Keep pets safe from frostbite with proper flooring

Concrete or stone floors are not the best things to keep your animals warm. Your hoofed livestock can damage their feet if they spend too much time on improper flooring. To keep your animals safe and floors insulated, lay down straw, woodchips, or other bedding material. Research the right material for your shelter and animals to provide them with the best bedding available.

Make a blizzard plan

With today’s technology, we can see extreme weather coming well in advance. This gives you an advantage when protecting your outdoor pets and livestock in the winter. Well before the season sets in, make a Blizzard Plan. Decide how you will provide food and keep it dry. Provide water that will not freeze and that your animals can easily access. Create paths to give your animals space to move through your property in the event of heavy snow or icy grounds.

Frostbite is a serious risk for outdoor pets and livestock every winter. Your blizzard plan should include a way to provide dry bedding and keep your animals dry. Younger animals are more vulnerable in the winter, so take the time to account for their care.
