4 Types of DIY Shelving for Your VersaTube Garage

by VersaTube Marketing on October 02, 2019

You can enhance your steel garage with a variety of shelving types. Sure, your VersaTube garage is a great place to park your car, but you can also make it into the workshop you’ve always wanted. Plus, shelving helps you maximize space and it keeps everything organized. We’ve provided detailed instructions on “How to Hang Shelves in Your Steel Building”, which you can find on our blog. While we don’t engineer or sell shelving, here are 4 types of DIY shelving for your VersaTube garage:

Choosing the Best Type of Shelving

The right type of shelving for you will depend on what you plan to be storing. If you have tools, chemicals, or other hazardous materials, you’ll want to keep it high enough to remain out of the reach of children. Metal shelves are typically preferable to wood for storing heavy materials since they won’t warp under pressure. You may elect for a free-standing shelf unit instead of installing shelves so you can move it around easily. Think about what type of shelving will serve you best as you plan.

Free-Standing Shelf Units

The advantage of free-standing shelving is that you don’t have to drill holes in the wall of your garage or place support boards. Simply set up the shelf wherever you want it to go and move it around at your leisure. The disadvantage, however, is that it is less permanent, and it may be a less efficient use of space depending on location.

Wooden Shelves

Wooden shelves are easy to install, and they offer a solid, permanent shelving solution for your garage. One of the great advantages of wood is that you can cut it to your desired length and width. For instance, if you want your shelves to extend out 12 inches from the wall, it’s no problem to cut your shelf boards to the desired size.

Metal Shelves

Metal shelves can be either solid or rack-type. Racks are much cheaper, but solid metal will support a heavier load. Metal shelves are ideal for storing tools and equipment of most kinds.

Adjustable Shelves

Slotted brackets are available for adjustable shelves. You can choose wood, wire, or metal for your adjustable shelves, and it is easy to raise or lower them depending on what you want to store. Adjustable shelf brackets are fairly cheap and easy to work with. Plus, you get the advantage of permanent installation with the customizability of a free-standing unit.
