6 Tips for Keeping Your Shed Neat & Organized
Have you ever experienced this? You stroll to your shed intending to grab your gardening tools, a wrench, or a paintbrush and what you need is nowhere to be found. Instead of knocking out your gardening or repair project, you spend all your time hunting. We know that pain. Nothing throws a wrench in your project like not being able to find the tool or supply you need! But it doesn’t have to be that way. Make organizing your shed your next project and you’ll never have to waste your afternoon searching for what you need again. Here are some ideas on how to organize your space, and keep it that way.
Add Shelving
To be organized, every single item needs a proper home, and just utilizing your shed’s floor space isn’t going to cut it. Add permanent metal shelving, floating shelves, free-standing metal shelving, repurpose an old bookcase, or stack wooden crates or milk crates on their sides for a budget-friendly shelving-unit. Pick whatever type of shelving fits your budget and style and you can’t go wrong!
Add Plastic Bins
Think shelving is all you need? Nope! That’s a sure way back into disorganization. Instead, line your shelves with labeled plastic bins. Some items you can sort by type: fertilizers, auto fluids, tennis balls, and rackets. Or you can organize your bins by theme: paint and paint supplies, lawn games, all types of gardening supplies.
Corral Small Parts in Jars
Glass jars with lids are the perfect storage solution for screws, allen wrenches, nails, paintbrushes, and any other small items that seem to disappear when they’re tossed into a big bin or toolbox. Glass canning jars are a pretty economical choice, plus they have the benefit of being clear so you can see what’s inside at a glance. If you want to organize on a dime, repurposing coffee containers, pickle jars, and vegetable cans are the way to go!
Install a Tool Hanger
Get long-handled rakes, shovels, hoes, and brooms off the floor by installing a tool hanger! If you don’t have the wall space to hang a long-handled tool organizer, or you want a DIY solution, slip them, handle side down, into a 5- or 10- gallon bucket or even an old trash can.
Use Wall Hooks
For larger items that don’t fit into bins or onto shelves, wall hooks can be a great solution. You can hang bikes, a bag with baseball bats and other sports equipment, Christmas wreaths, ladders, and more.
Add a Slat or Peg Wall
Medium to large-sized tools and lawn equipment can often be hung on a slat or peg wall for neat and attractive storage. That’s also a good place to stash items you want out of your kids’ reach.
