Steel and Superheroes

by Stacy Fender on June 29, 2018

Sure, there are lots of awesome superheroes out there. Captain America. Black Panther. Batman (Though to a lot of people, that one is debatable.). But our favorite? Superman, of course. The Man of Steel.

He earned that nickname because of his super strength. When you think about the strength of steel, it makes complete sense, doesn’t it? It’s the backbone of America. We use it to build skyscrapers, homes, shops, restaurants, factories, tools, toys and more things than we can even name. We use it everyday and yet so many of us know so little about it. So, let’s learn some facts about steel!

It’s in your car

The first year a car was made with steel? 1918. Steel makes cars safer - the seat belt latches, safety cage and door latches, and the protective door beams are all made from steel.

It’s in your appliances, too

About 75 percent of all major appliances are made from steel, and all appliance motors are made from the material. Steel just makes appliances better - the steel hinge on a refrigerator door can hold more than 140 pound without sagging.

It’s so easy to recycle

In North America, we recycle about 70 percent of the world’s steel. Because of its magnetic properties, it’s easy to separate from other waste, and it can be recycled an endless number of times without harming its durability. In fact, recycling steel saves enough energy to power 18 million American homes each year.

It’s strong

Of course. The Man of Steel and all of that. But HOW strong? Well …

  • Compare wood doors to steel doors. Steel doors are fireproof, and provide 10 times the protection against intruders.

  • Traditional roofs last about 15-20 years. Steel roofs last 50.

  • Steel framed buildings can withstand termites, cracking, warping, rotting, settling and splitting. No wood frame building can claim that.
