Wisdom Wednesday - Tips for Organizing Your Steel Shed

by Stacy Fender on May 30, 2018

Organizing your steel shed is easier than you think

What’s the current state of your shed?

Come on. Be honest. You can tell us the truth.

It’s a mess, isn’t it?

It’s packed to the gills with bicycles and coolers, lawn chairs and watering cans. Rakes. The lawn mower. Your dad’s old fishing equipment. Your mom’s old picnic basket. Weed killer. Plant food. Pool chemicals. Pool toys. It’s an endless list, really. And it’s a miracle you can find anything in there. If you even try to anymore. If you’re like a lot of people, you just lock the door and walk away. It’s a problem to tackle on a different day

What you need is some serious steel shed organization.

We’re not going to lie to you. It’s gonna be a job. But when you’re through, you’ll have the most organized shed in town. (Of course, it’s up to you to keep it that way.)

Try these tips to get started:

1. Clean it out. Sorry to say, but you just can’t organize anything without cleaning everything out, first. So pull all that stuff out of your shed, throw or give away everything you don’t need, and sweep out the building.

2. Garden tool storage. All those rakes, hoes, shovels, and similar equipment can be a huge pain to store. It’s essential to get them up against the wall in an organized way, to keep the handles from tangling. Purchase a system or buy your own.

3. Shelves. Floorspace in your steel shed is valuable, so using all the height in your shed is important. Install or build shelving that fits the space, and use it wisely for smaller items like coolers and gardening supplies. Place bins on the shelves to corral tiny items that could otherwise cause a mess.

4. Don’t overlook the ceiling. If the height of your shed allows it, use the ceiling of your shed to store more items out of the way, like ladders.

Steel shed organization is all about using every available inch of space wisely. By clearing the clutter and purchasing some organizational equipment, you’ll be well on your way.
