How to Choose the Best Place to Put Your Garage

by Abby Mwesigwa on October 03, 2018

When it comes to picking the right place for your VersaTube garage, most people have several options. For parking your car, nothing may be more convenient than having your garage attached to the side of your house. But you could also choose to place it in the rear, detached at the side, or somewhere else all together. In other words, you have some decisions to make. Thinking these things through may help you make up your mind ...

Purpose of Your Garage

Before you set the location of your garage in stone, consider everything you want to use it for. Will it be solely for parking your cars? Are you parking in it, plus using it for storage? Maybe you’re adding a garage on to serve as a workshop or outbuilding. If its main purpose will be for parking, a traditional, forward-facing spot on the side of your home may make the most sense. For a workshop, maybe detached and at the side or the rear of your home will work best. Once you’ve firmly decided how you’re going to use your VersaTube garage, you’ll have a better idea of where you’d ideally like it positioned.

Stake Your Location

When you think you know where you’d like your new garage to be, we recommend staking your location so you can get a better idea how the steel garage will look on your existing property. This will also help you identify any issues, like whether you might create a drainage problem in your yard. Check out this tutorial on how to stake out your proposed location.

Zoning

Got a pretty good idea where you want to set up your new VersaTube steel garage? Before you move forward with your location, you probably want to check the zoning and your boundaries to make sure you know exactly where your property line is. You’ll also need a permit before you can start the build. Contact your local building and zoning office to learn more.

Aesthetics

Finally, before you finalize your location give some thought to how you feel about the aesthetics. If you live in a neighborhood where almost everyone has their garage entries hidden or at a 90 degree angle to the front of the home, are you still going to be happy with your forward-facing location? If you’ve chosen a location toward the rear of your yard, have you considered how this might affect any recreational activities?

There’s a lot to consider when you’re trying to find the perfect space for your new garage. Once you’ve got the location nailed down, you get to move on to the fun part - picking your VersaTube garage design!  Click here to check out our standard models and to learn how to create your custom design.
