How to Choose the Best Place to Put Your VersaTube Shed

by Abby Mwesigwa on November 07, 2018

When it comes to picking the right place for your VersaTube shed, you’re probably considering a couple different locations. Whether you’re planning your new VersaTube building as a standard utility shed for storing your lawn mower and tools or you have something more elaborate in mind, (“she-shed” anyone?), we have a few tips to help you pick the perfect location.

What’s the Main Purpose of Your Shed?

How you plan to use your shed plays a big role in picking what will be the best place to set it up. For homeowners who are putting in a utility shed, a back corner placement often makes the most sense, as that orientation will probably leave the most recreation space in the backyard. Converting your shed to a greenhouse, “man-cave” or pool house may each inspire a different location.

Utilities

Even if it’s allowed in your local area, you probably don’t want to build your shed over any buried power lines or utilities. While you can disassemble and reassemble your shed if needed, do you want to have to worry about that if someone needs to access the services under your shed? Before you get set on one location, have all the underground power lines and utilities marked.

Stake Your Location

When you think you’ve picked the best spot, we recommend staking your location so you can get a better idea of the footprint your shed will leave on your property. Staking is also great for pinpointing any issues there might be with your proposed spot. Suddenly you might realize there really isn’t enough clearance from the tree to maneuver your mower into the shed, or maybe you’ll notice your shed will be blocking the garden from receiving the afternoon sun. Or, hopefully, you’ll have confirmation the location is indeed the perfect one! For a tutorial on staking, click here.

Zoning and Permits

Ready to move forward with the location? One last thing! It’s a good idea to contact your local building and zoning office to double check your boundary lines. Depending on local building codes, you may also need a permit.

We know there’s a lot to think about when you’re trying to find the perfect space for your new shed.
