Builder Stories: Building a Steel Garage With My Son

VersaTube steel building kits are a great project for a father teaching his son to build. Check out a builder story about a father, son, and their steel garage.

I always look forward to autumn’s arrival. Many people associate the season with pumpkin stands and changing leaves, but for me, the cool crisp days bring back some of my fondest childhood memories. I remember being a young teenager who, as the summer heat and humidity finally subsided, helped his father with projects around our home.

Assisting my father was about more than just starting to feel like a grownup – it was an opportunity to get to really know him. As we’ve both gotten older, I treasure those memories. Looking back now, I recall his patience as I made mistakes and how he took the time to teach me how to use his tools. Those lessons learned on home improvement projects have stayed with me all these years and have helped in just about every aspect of my life.

That’s why as my own son turns 13, we took on our own father and son home improvement project: constructing a VersaTube do-it-yourself metal garage kit. One of my neighbors put up a VersaTube metal building last year and from his description of the process, I thought it might be the perfect task for a little father and son bonding.

I made the right choice – it was almost as if VersaTube knew exactly what I had in mind. The garage kit was shipped with everything we needed right down to every screw and bracket. We didn’t have to make any trips to the home improvement store wondering if they’d have the right materials in the proper sizes.

The garage components were pre-engineered to a custom design that was precisely what I’d wanted. The VersaTube sales rep even took the time to suggest a few changes that helped my budget and resulted in a building that turned out to be more user-friendly than I’d envisioned.

What about the father and son bonding? I couldn’t have picked a better project. The instructions that came with the metal building kit were easy to understand and there were plenty of illustrations showing how the various components went together. It was almost like assembling a giant model car except we were using screws and brackets instead of Testors glue.

Many of the connections used VersaTube’s patented slip-fit technology and when I watched my son’s self-confidence grow as he easily slid the pieces together, I recalled another young man working with his father many autumns ago. As we look at our finished garage with a sense of accomplishment, there isn’t a doubt in my mind that my son is just as proud now as I was back then.

Of course, he’s also pretty excited as we’re planning on using the garage for our next father/son project: rebuilding a classic Mustang. And who knows, as long as VersaTube garages last, he may be using the building to spend time with his own son one day.
