Garage vs Workshop
Folks often ask:
Should I set up my new steel building as a simple garage for storage, or should I outfit my new steel building to be a fully functional workshop?
Well, there are several considerations here, namely:
Space
How large of a building can you put up? How much of that space will be used exclusively for static storage?
If space is limited, you’ll have to choose to use your new building as either a storage unit or a workshop.
Of course, having the space to utilize the new structure for both purposes would be ideal! Ultimately, if you end up setting up a workshop, you’re going to need someplace to store materials anyhow.
Budget
Depending on the kind of work you plan to do in a proposed workshop, setting the space up initially could be very costly. If you’re an art painter, you’re probably already poised to start working.
If you’re a mechanic or a fabricator on the other hand and you don’t already have all of the requisite equipment to perform your work, you’re facing a huge initial investment that will likely be much more than your steel building itself.
If you’re a professional, you’ll opt for a building that you can use for work and for storage.
If you’re a DIY weekend warrior, your best bet is to secure the largest building that you can fit and afford. Let that building begin its life as a garage and piece your workshop together over time.
If your eventual workshop will always be used as a garage as well, get creative with your storage solutions. There are a lot of products on the market today designed to consolidate and organize household tools and the like.
Consider building a loft or an attic for storage. This will free up some floor space for your workspace.
