Can I use a gravel floor in my VersaTube building?

by VersaTube on October 01, 2018

It may create the perfect setting for a beautiful ride on a backcountry road, but is gravel the right choice for your VersaTube steel building floor? Here are a few things that you may want to consider before making your final decision:

It’s cost-effective

Gravel is a budget-friendly element to work with when it comes to flooring. If you are wanting to upgrade from a dirt floor and are unable to afford concrete, gravel is an affordable alternative. This makes it a popular choice for temporary or even longer-term flooring.

How will you be utilizing your VersaTube building?

Gravel is a compilation of different stones and rocks that have been ground down. So, in essence, it’s a stone sawdust. This combination of dirt and ground rocks can create a little bit of dust. If dust isn't a problem for the items that may be stored in your building, then no worries.

Will your building be used as a garage?

If you plan to work on or keep cars in your building, you may want to shy away from gravel. Essentially gravel can make it difficult to keep things level. The weight of your car will inevitably push the gravel toward the edges of your building which in turn may require you to rake back into place frequently.

Things may get a little damp.

One thing’s for sure - gravel is not a good barrier for moisture. In fact, if you wish to keep the moisture level down in your building, you may want to consider laying a layer of plastic down before installing the gravel to create a moisture barrier. This will decrease the amount of moisture but will not prevent it all together.

While concrete is the best, most common option for a VersaTube building floor, gravel is a great low-budget alternative. So the overall answer is yes … yes, you can use a gravel floor in your VersaTube building, as long as it meets all the needs you have!
