Have you ever met a “casual” hunter?

Neither have we. Hunters, especially deer hunters, are a pretty serious bunch. And even though deer season is a while off yet, for most people preparation for the season starts now. After all, for a hunting season to be truly successful there’s an awful lot to do.

1. Sight in your bow or rifle. The closer it gets to the season, the busier the ranges get. If you want to avoid long lines later, go ahead and take the time to sight in your weapons now.

2. Talk to the local farmers. If you have your own hunting land, talk to the nearby farmers. They’re out all the time, and have a better idea than most anyone else where those big bucks are feeding and what they’re doing day to day. And if you don’t have your own land and plan on requesting permission to hunt, start making friends now.

3. Get your trail cameras up. Get your cameras up on your hunting land (or land you have permission to hunt) so you can start tracking deer movements now. You’ll be thankful for the information later.

4. Clear some paths. Nothing ruins a hunt like fighting through the brush. Now is the time to clear the travel paths on your land so you aren’t stumbling over fallen logs and fighting your way through honeysuckle or rhododendron.

5. Check your gear. If you wait until the last minute, you’ll end up forgetting something, being unable to replace something because the store is sold out, or paying too much. Now is the time to make sure you have everything that you need and it’s all in proper working order. Then, if you have your own hunting land, store it on-site in a secure location so that when hunting season arrives you’re 100% ready to go.
