Three Features to Add to Your VersaTube Workshop

by VersaTube on February 25, 2019

If you’re ready to build your VersaTube workshop, there are some key features you’ll want to be sure to think about when it comes to your new space:

1) Workbench

What’s the point of a workshop if you don’t have properly executed workspace? Whether you’re converting your existing garage into a workshop or building a brand-new unit, you need to consider what kind of space you need.

For small, personal projects, a basic, 2-foot deep countertop can make a useful workbench. Add a workbench vise into the mix, and you’ve got a basic home workspace that can fit into a small corner or along a back wall.

With a detached workshop/garage unit, you might be planning to handle larger or commercial-grade projects. If this is the case, you can customize your workbench so that it stretches across an entire wall or works as a large standalone workstation. If you use it as your workshop centerpiece, you can modify it to fit your project needs.

Make sure that your workspace allows you to move freely. Limited space and tight corners will make it difficult (not to mention, frustrating) to work on projects or move equipment as needed.

2) Electricity

Power and lighting are essential to any workshop. That means including electricity in your workshop. With a detached unit, you will likely need to:

  • Add a 100-amp breaker on your home’s primary panel

  • Dig a trench to carry the conduit to the unit

  • Include a new sub-panel.

Remember that you’ll need circuits for lighting (indoor and outdoor) and outlets. If you want an automatic door opener, you’ll want circuits for that, too.

Workshop lighting should clearly and effectively illuminate your workshop, especially important workspace. If you have multiple workspaces, add light fixtures over each one.

3) Storage

For many people, kitchen cabinets - new or recycled - work just fine as workshop storage. You can also purchase storage specially designed for workshops and garages. And don’t forget to use the space under your counters to store bins and boxes while mounting certain equipment and tools on rollout stands.

Other storage options include:

  • Adjustable metal storage shelves

  • Plastic storage shelves

  • Locking cabinets

  • Wall-mounted shelving units

  • Floor-anchored shelving.

Storage will come in various shapes and sizes, just make sure that whatever you choose, it will fit your space.

Now you’re really ready to design and build your VersaTube workshop! If you’re looking for true customization, we offer building kits that allow you to fine-tune additional details, or you can design your own from the beginning. The choice is yours.
