What tools do I need to build a VersaTube building?

by VersaTube on October 02, 2018

After completing the foundation, it’s time to put your VersaTube building together. Before you can do anything though, you need to ensure you have all of the correct tools. If you don’t have them, then you’ll want to gather them before you begin building. Remember to make sure that your base rails are arranged appropriately so that you can start your project off on the right foot.

Although we know how exciting it can be to get started on the Big Day, you absolutely shouldn’t start without all of the proper tools. After the concrete is poured and your VersaTube garage is ready, double check that you have the following tools for your project:

Level tool. Your level (also known as a bubble level or spirit level), should be at least 4 feet. It’s used to show whether a surface is horizontal or vertical.

Tape measure. Depending on your building’s size, the length of your tape measure can vary. Wide blade models with a blade lock tend to work the best. A 25 foot tape measure is typically just fine for a multitude of applications.

Adjustable wrench. A mid-sized adjustable wrench is very versatile and is the only type of wrench you’ll need. A socket set is also good to have on-hand.

Chalk box and line. You can find these just about anywhere, especially home improvement and hardware stores. The best part is that they’re very affordable. Make sure that the box actually comes with powdered chalk so that you don’t need to waste time by making another run to your local hardware store. Sometimes powdered chalk needs to be purchased apart from the box.

Tin snips. Like your chalk box and line, tin snips can be found at most home improvement and hardware stores. They’re great for cutting through sheet metal and other difficult materials.

Corded Drill. A corded drill is a MUST. Since you will be drilling through thick metal throughout the project, you will want to avoid cordless drills at all costs. If you don’t use a corded drill, you run the risk of running out of battery fairly quickly.

Hammer. As long as you can use your hammer with one hand, any hammer will do. Some people even opt for a small sledge hammer as it’s still easy to use with one hand.

Step ladder. You’re going to need a step ladder, but the size will depend on your building’s height. First and foremost, ensure that your ladder is strong and structurally reliable. If you’re able to reach the peak of the structure from the third step from the top (or the final step on the ladder that has been marked as safe) then you’re good to go.

Safety glasses. We cannot stress the importance of safety glasses enough! All it takes for you to be seriously injured is a single metal piece to land in your eye. If wearing safety glasses means the difference between having a great day, a major injury or possibly going blind, we urge you to always wear them during projects. Your safety glasses should have been designed specifically with metal materials in mind.

It can be tempting to buy cheap tools and equipment, but with your safety and the safety of others on the line, it’s important to invest in the highest quality tools you can afford. Only use tools from trusted sources. If buying new tools is too big of an investment for you (especially if you only need them for a few hours), consider renting them.

To help you with preparation, your VersaTube kit should include a list of the tools you’ll need for your building project.
