Upgrading Your Garage? - Here’s Where To Begin...

by Stacy Fender on June 07, 2018

If you plan on using your garage for more than simply storing your stuff, you’ll need to make some simple, utilitarian upgrades to the interior. A properly outfitted garage will provide you with much more than convenience - A cozy, personalized workshop will catalyze your creative energy.

Garage climate control

Outbuildings without insulation, air conditioning, etc. can turn into ice boxes in the winter and ovens in the summer. It’s pretty difficult to concentrate and create when you’re bundled up and freezing, or otherwise enduring the polar (haha) extreme.

Consider some of these solutions:

Choose a light roof color that reflects the sun’s energy away from your building rather than absorbing that energy and overheating your building during the summer months.

Insulate the inside of your building from the roof down to the floor - and don’t forget the garage door! Those roll up and down garage doors are often the weakest link in terms of garage temperature maintenance. The good news: Garage door insulation kits are very inexpensive and very easy to install.

With a light colored, reflective roof and interior insulation, you’ll be more comfortable and your heating and air cooling costs will be cut down to a minimum.

Speaking of heating and cooling, consider adding a combination heating and air cooling unit. If you’re old school and have plenty of surplus firewood, add a wood stove to your garage for unsurpassed heating and cozy ambiance.

Once you’ve got your garage energy efficient and air-conditioned for comfortable year-round use, you can delve into the more fun details such as:

Flooring options - concrete, epoxy, tiles, laminate

Shelving, Cabinets, and other storage

Tools of your trade

Decor

Your particular craft (and whether or not you have to share your garage with the rest of your family) will dictate those final details, but the universal, paramount place to begin your garage interior upgrades is with those above mentioned temperature control solutions.
