How a VersaTube RV Cover Survived Hurricane Michael
Nobody enjoys natural disasters, but this fortunate customer was glad that his Versatube RV cover protected his camper and trailer during Michael. A tree crashed down onto the RV cover during the hurricane, breaking in half when it made contact. Despite the fallen tree and the intensity of the hurricane, the cover shielded the camper and trailer from damage. Our customer was amazed that his unit persisted in such severe circumstances, leaving his prized possessions with minimal damage.
Although the RV cover appears quite damaged in the images, it was relatively easy for the owner to repair. Our customer service team worked proactively with him to help him find out what parts he needed. It turned out he only needed some sheet metal and hat channel! With our team’s guidance, he made the repairs himself and didn’t have to build a new structure. He saved money AND time by replacing just a few components. Now his unit is as good as new!
Hurricane Michael was listed as the third most severe Atlantic hurricane to reach the United States in terms of pressure. Although it lasted a few days, it’s impact is still being felt in Florida as people and animals have been displaced from their homes. With Hurricane Michael’s highest winds reaching 155 miles per hour and 60 deaths, Florida, Georgia, Cuba and the Cayman Islands are still recovering.
So how can you better protect your belongings in the event of a similar natural disaster? The answer isn’t exactly straight forward. Depending on your situation, you will need to take different steps. Our customer who shared his story had taken a proactive approach by installing his VersaTube unit BEFORE disaster struck. His decision to add a simple RV cover potentially saved him from thousands in damages to his camper and trailer.
One step to take alongside being proactive, is to prepare your home. Move all outdoor items and furniture inside if you can and clear out gutters so that you decrease any chances of your home flooding. Lock your windows and doors to prevent them from ripping open. Check your garage and reinforce the door if necessary and BRING YOUR PETS INSIDE. Remember that not all hotels are pet friendly, so if you need to evacuate, ensure that you know what hotels are pet friendly ahead of time.
Other steps you can take include staying updated on any nearby major weather events and securing your car. Battery-powered weather radios can give you important alerts regardless if you have wifi or cell phone service. For your car, make sure it has a full tank of gas, working window wipers, tires that are in good shape and sealed windows.
Tip: consider putting an “emergency bag” in the trunk of your car. It should have extra phone chargers, maps, insurance information, a flashlight and water.
Finally, you can prepare for flooding with these tips from Bankrate or these guidelines from FEMA.
