4 Flooring Options for Your VersaTube Workshop
There’s one very important thing you have to consider as you finalize the plans for your VersaTube workshop: the type of floor you’ll have inside.
(OK - there are several important things you have consider, but this one is probably pretty high on your list.)
The good news is there are several flooring options available. They all have their pros and cons, though, so read on to learn which flooring choice will be right for you.
Concrete
If it’s in your budget, we recommend you go with a concrete floor for your workshop. Assuming it’s installed correctly it should last just as long as your VersaTube building. Why? It requires the least amount of upkeep, and it’s the worry-free choice. You’ll have no concerns about water coming up through the floor or dust making a mess of your tools or vehicles. It cleans up well, too. Spill a box of nails on the floor? With a concrete floor you can reach for a broom and dustpan, and restore order in minutes. Think of the time you’ll spend crawling around, picking them up by hand should you drop them on a gravel floor!
Asphalt
Concrete’s cousin can be a great choice for your workshop floor! If you go with a large shop, you’ll still need concrete footings and piers for support, but choosing asphalt for the rest can be beneficial.
First off, it’s less expensive than concrete. It’s quicker to install and requires almost no drying time. Unlike concrete, it can be patched easily when cracks occur, and it’s more resistant to stains. Asphalt also has one up on concrete when it comes to the environment. it’s recyclable. Should you decide to switch your floor to concrete in the future, the asphalt one can be crushed and used again.
Negatives? It will need resealing every few years, and it doesn’t have the same lifespan of a concrete floor.,Though if you care for it properly, you can expect it to last for 20 years or more.
Gravel
For the long term, gravel is probably not the best choice for your VersaTube workshop. It is great for draining away water if you’ll be using your workshop for any application where that would be helpful. However, for support strength and longevity, you’ll want to consider asphalt or concrete. Not in the budget yet? In that case, a gravel floor with concrete piers and footings is a great option until you’re ready to upgrade to your permanent floor.
Dirt
While a prepared bare earth floor can be a pretty good choice for a carport or a lean-to, you’ll probably want to pass on this option for your workshop. That said, it can be done. If your budget isn’t ready for a concrete floor but you’ll want to upgrade soon, a dirt floor might make a lot of sense. Of course, concrete footings and piers are a must for support.
