6 of the Best Excuses EVER to Get That Barn You Want

by VersaTube on January 04, 2019

While buying and building a barn isn’t a walk in the park (especially for first-timers), if you don’t buy a barn and you have livestock and/or horses, there could be catastrophic consequences. A barn is the only way to make sure your animals receive the proper shelter and care.

But not just any old barn will do. You should be especially sure that you buy the right barn - one that will stand up to everything Mother Nature and your animals can throw at it. But if you need more motivation than that, here are six of the best excuses ever to get the barn that you want and need:

1) It protects your animals.

While a barn can be a setting for attractive Pinterest photos, it’s much more than something pretty to look at. A barn will shield your horses and other farm animals from harsh elements and weather events. That nasty rainstorm around the corner? No big deal. Six to eight inches of unexpected snow? Child’s play. Racoons? Coyotes? Your barn is a great way to deter predatory wild animals.

2) It keeps your tools and equipment dry.

Direct exposure to snow, rain and sunlight can do a serious number on your tools and equipment. Protected in a dry, temperature-controlled environment, they will last longer as the lack of exposure to the elements means less overall wear. That means you’ll spend less money and time repairing and replacing them.

3) It protects hay and other feed from mold.

A quality, temperature-controlled barn with properly installed AC units will keep your hay dry and free of mold. The same is true for other dry feed and can help keep your animals from getting sick. Hay should always be properly contained and handled to prevent illness, mold, accidental fires and/or death.

Hay should never have a moisture content over 14 percent as it can lead to spontaneous combustion and can “dust” (which can result in horses developing respiratory issues and colic). Remember not to open up a stack that is suspected of being in a combustion state as it can blow up when oxygen hits the fire or gases which may have built up inside the stack.

Additionally, remember to never bale hay that gets wet. Luckily, a good barn can help with this.

4) The loft can double as a haven for reading or studying.

Although it may not be conventional, if your barn has a loft, you could always turn the loft into a place for reading, studying or relaxation. In the early days of American farming, it was normal for household activities to revolve in or around the barn. A loft was a nice, semi-quiet spot to enjoy a good book or a board game.

5) You can rent it out.

If you’re interested in creating an additional stream of income, your barn can be a great pathway to that goal. Some people opt to rent out otherwise empty stalls to horse owners who lack a barn themselves. Others who have retired from farming take to renting out their barns for photo shoots, weddings and events. Barns make for an incredible backdrop, so they are understandably popular destinations.

6) Create unforgettable family memories.

A barn is the heart of your farm or ranch, acting as the epicenter for many of the most important tasks involving your animals. It is also a place where you will create memories. Some will be sweet, some will be happy and some will make you laugh. Although we don’t exactly relish our memories of shoveling manure in the morning, we smile when we remember all of the good times, including the moments we shared with our beloved horses.
