3 Beginner Woodworking Projects for You & Your Son This Weekend

by VersaTube Marketing on August 23, 2019

With summer quickly winding to a close, it’s more important than ever to grab quality time with your children while you can. Soon, school will be back in full swing—with homework in the evenings, early bedtimes, and a plethora of extracurriculars to fill your weekends. And while all those things are important, so are the simple times of togetherness as you build your relationship with your son. Try out these three beginner woodworking projects this weekend and help build a relationship to last a lifetime.

Elementary School

A homemade birdhouse is the ultimate starter project for any father and elementary-aged son woodworking day. Grab a kit from your local hobby store or come up with your own special plan with wood that you have in your shed or workshop. Quickly zip the wood through your table or miter saw and start assembling. Your son will love to try his hand at a hammer and nails, nail gun or wood glue to hold the house together. Once assembled, let your son paint the birdhouse with his own flair. You’ll not only have the best day together—you’ll have a keepsake to display in the backyard for years to come.

Middle School

If you have a middle schooler, you know these boys are all about action. Find a local pinewood derby race and register you and your son as competitors. Then get to work on your derby cars. With endless design ideas available on Pinterest and derby websites, the sky’s the limit on what you can design. Want to race bacon and egg cars? How about toothpaste and a toothbrush? Just cut out the shapes on your band saw. Then sand, paint, install the wheels and weights. You will have so much fun with this project, it may become a yearly father-son event.

High School

As the skills of children grow, so do their capabilities to fashion incredible pieces of wood art. Let your high school son try his hand shaping things on your lathe. A fantastic beginner project is homemade chunky candlesticks. Painted in a farmhouse white, they are the perfect gift for moms and grandmas for Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries and more. Plus, with handmade love, displaying them in a prominent place at home will show your son how much you love and appreciate his hard work.

Days like these will soon fade into memory as your children are grown and fly the nest. Don’t delay on having a place to build memories that will last long after they are gone. With a garage or workshop shed from VersaTube, woodworking projects with your son no longer have to be few and far between. Dedicated workspace in a garage or workshop designed with your family in mind can give you the space and tools you need to build the most important relationships of your life—the lifelong relationship of a father and child. Let VersaTube help you build the workspace of your dreams. With DIY kits available, your weekend project time will be what you look forward to all week long. Need a custom option?
