Do I Need a Permit to Build My VersaTube Garage?

by VersaTube Marketing on June 20, 2019

You’ve settled on an American-made steel VersaTube garage and we bet now you’re thinking: “If Slip-Fit Connections go together much like a LEGO™ set and building the garage only takes a few days, do I still need a building permit?”

In a word: Maybe.

Many jurisdictions require a building permit for constructing a garage.

To find out if you need a permit - just ask. A good way to begin is by searching building permits and the name of your city or county online, or by searching for your municipality’s planning and zoning office and simply giving them a call.

If you do need a permit, there will be a fee, (typically small), and you’ll need to provide your garage plans for approval. Many planning offices only require a simple drawing, but if your municipality requires more, you can add on the certified, stamped drawings and calculations as an option at checkout.

If your project requires a permit, the process will include official inspections at certain points during construction. So you know what to expect, it’s fine to ask the planning and zoning office at what points you’ll need to schedule these inspections. Typically, though, you can expect to have the inspector out to check the concrete footings and piers, the slab, the framing, and for the final inspection. If you’re wiring your garage for electrical, there will be two electrical inspections (rough and final).

Most areas modify building codes pretty often so even if you’ve had a recent build, check your current building codes before you start. To simplify things for contractors and DIYers, your municipality may even have their building codes online.

If you’re having a contractor build your VersaTube garage instead of DIYing it, he or she will be a great help making sure you get the correct permits and will schedule the inspections your new garage needs. Do you want a contractor, but aren’t sure how to find one? Let us help! We have a nationwide network of certified installers who assemble VersaTube buildings!
