What Kinds of Livestock Can You Keep in a VersaTube Barn?

by VersaTube Marketing on April 23, 2019

At VersaTube we have a saying: if you can dream it, build it. With VersaTube Steel Buildings, you can build just about anything (think LEGO’s but for adults!). So, do you need a barn designed that will house large livestock or a small shelter for animals like goats, sheep or pigs? We’ve got you covered!

Before you order your VersaTube Barn, remember that no single barn is a one-size-fits-all for everyone. It’s important to consider what animals you plan to shelter, what kind of space you’re working with and what your long-term plans are for your farm. There’s no such thing as success without direction, so make sure that you’ve got the essential stuff down pat before you begin your building project.

Here are some of the livestock you can keep in your VersaTube Barn or Loafing Shed:

Horses

Farmers, breeders, and casual trail-riders typically need different setups. When it comes to horses, bigger is always better for barn sizing and design. Horses require plenty of space and we can customize your building to meet your animals’ needs. Our steel barns and loafing shed frames were built with durability and simplicity in mind.

Cattle

Like horses, cattle require a lot of space. Generally speaking, 35 to 50 square feet per cow is acceptable. They should never be so confined that they can’t turn around or move. On the other hand, if you have a lot adjacent to your barn, then you can decrease space to 20 to 30 square feet per 1,000 to 1,300 lb cow.

Goats

These silly little guys may not require as much space as horses or cattle, but they still need plenty of room. Where standard sized goats require about 10 feet per goat, miniatures are alright with about 200 square feet per goat.

Sheep

Sure, they’re adorable, but they’re no walk in the park! Sheep require special care, especially when they’re lambing. Lambing pens need to be about 16 to 25 square feet and group housing requires 16 to 20 square feet. Luckily, feeder lambs are happy and comfortable with just 8 to 10 square feet. Remember, with a pasture adjacent to your barn, your sheep won’t need as much space.

Pigs

Pigs must have access to pens that are at least 10-feet-by-10-feet. Sows and sow herds become despondent and can become quite sick without proper stall or pen space. For them, lack of space can lead to sores, decreased appetite, and an overall bad mental state. As with any farm animal, these intelligent animals should be treated with absolute care and regard for their well-being.

Small or Non-Standard Animals

Don’t be afraid to be creative! VersaTube buildings can be designed to fit your specifications (see for yourself by clicking here!). Whether you plan to add llamas, donkeys, ostrich, emu or zebra to your collection- we can and will accommodate you!
