Steps For Maintaining Your Steel Building

by Matthew Sullivan on August 09, 2018

Though it’s true that a steel framed building is less susceptible to deterioration than its wood framed counterparts, as with any structure, you should perform annual inspections and maintenance as needed.

Maintaining your VersaTube building system is easy and straightforward. The best way to minimize maintenance needs is simply to keep your building and surrounding area clean.

Some of us keep a cleaner shop space than others… Some folks call that “OCD” - We call it “ATD” (attention to detail). Take the time to clean up after yourself and re-organize your shop space periodically.

Outside of your building is where the majority of your building maintenance and preventative maintenance will take place.

Do you have tree branches hanging over your building? It’s a good idea to trim your trees back so that tree debris doesn’t land on your roof. Larger branches can do some real damage to sheet metal roofs. Smaller tree debris can collect on comp shingle roofs, giving way to moss growth, clogged gutters, clogged downspouts, and more maintenance work!

Speaking of roofs, there are instances where metal is better than comp shingles - and vise versa. If you live above the snow line, several factors will determine what roofing product you choose.

Got a deck surrounding your building? Park next to your building? Got a steep building? If you answered yes to those three questions, you might want to opt for comp. A steep metal roof without cleats can unload snow at such a high velocity that it can take out deck railings, damage cars, pull out roof panel screws, etc.

On the other hand, if you live in an area that gets heavy snow, you may not want comp shingles if your building cannot withstand the weight of the snow piling up on there.

We take all of these factors into consideration when we auto format your structure to exceed your local building codes. Nevertheless, it’s a good idea to contact us with any questions if you are roofing in your VersaTube structure yourself. If you’ve ordered a “frame only” kit and will be hiring a local contractor to assemble your building, discuss your available roofing options with them as well.

Observe where water collects on or around your structure. Be sure to conduct whatever maintenance necessary to drain and divert water away from your steel building.

Lastly, an annual exterior wash will keep your building looking great!

We encourage you to contact us at any time to discuss maintenance practices. Happy VersaTubing!
