To get the most out of your barn, add a shed.
Most farms - from large operations to smaller hobby farms - have plenty of outbuildings in addition to the barn. But one that we think is underutilized is the shed. Too often, it’s too far from the barn to be fully useful, or it’s full of junk instead of the equipment or accessories that could really come in handy.
If you’re currently looking for storage options, we offer building kits for utility and loafing sheds in a variety of colors, sizes and shapes - we can even customize your building kit to fit your specific needs and wants - so you can build the shed you need, right where you need it.
Wondering what you should keep in your new shed? We think these items would really come in handy ...
1) Barn Door Privacy Lock
This one is probably the least obvious on our entire list. A barn door privacy lock should be kept on-hand in the event that your current lock malfunctions, rusts away or is broken by intruders (although we hope this NEVER happens!).
2) Fans
In the sweltering heat of the summer and in the chill of winter, proper ventilation is absolutely essential to any barn. High output basket fans and ceiling fans are ideal for barn use.
If one or more of your fans breaks, you will be very thankful to have a backup waiting in your shed. This will save you considerable time and possibly even money, as in addition to the cost of buying a new fan, an overnight shipment can get expensive. You can’t afford to risk your animals’ health, so this is truly a must-have accessory.
3) Lighting
Just as fans are essential to the well-being of your animals, lighting is key to properly operating your barn. You should consider keeping additional lighting around because it could seriously save your backside. It isn’t uncommon for barn lighting to become incapacitated due to harsh weather conditions or other unforeseen events.
4) Dump Cart
No one wants to bump into a dump cart when they’re working in the barn. Rather than letting it take up unnecessary space where you work, store it out of the way. Your shed is the perfect place for it!
5) Hay Caddy
Hay caddies are wonderful for difficult tasks like hay bale, bedding or feed transportation. As much as we love them for their versatility and assistance around the barn, they can be hazardous if they’re left in high-traffic areas. Store them safely and securely away from the barn.
6) Bridle Holders/Hooks
If they’re broken or lost, you’ll be thankful to have backup bridle holders and/or hooks. Don’t forget that they’re good for hanging more than bridles on!
7) Wash Bay Heater
One of the worst possible things that can happen in the wash bay, (other than an animal or person getting hurt) is for a wash bay heater to break. The wash bay heater is key to keeping people, animals and objects warm despite any wind or drafts. Having one or more of them on hand will keep your animals and wash bay safer.
8) Wash Bay Lighting
Like any other type of barn lighting, wash bay lights must be in working order. Imagine standing in the wash bay when the lights suddenly flicker out. Wouldn’t it be great to have back-up lighting in your VersaTube utility shed?
9) Saddle Rack
Turn your shed into a tack room! If tack is taking over your barn, maybe it’s time save sace, and store your less-frequently used items in your shed instead.
