She Shed vs. Man Cave? (How about both!)

by VersaTube on February 14, 2019

No matter how much you love spending time with your family, everyone craves a space and some time to call their own. Converting a spare bedroom, garage, or basement into a man cave has been popular for decades, and in recent years ladies have joined the trend by creating their own sanctuaries, commonly called she sheds.

Are you and your significant other currently “discussing” whether or not to use the shed in your backyard for a man cave or she shed? Why not have both?

Sure, you could share your recreation space: The appropriately-sized (not giant, as she calls it) television, stocked bar with neon lights, and an ultra-comfy sectional on one side of the room with the other side designated for sewing, scrapbooking, and reading. But will either one of you really love the space? Instead, create seperate a man cave and she shed so you can each enjoy your spaces to the fullest.

Men vs. Women

Let’s be honest. For the most part, men and women have different ideas about how to spend their down time. So instead of ignoring her craft supplies when you invite the guys over for the game, or ignoring his beer fridge when you have your friends over for girls night, you’ll both be happier with your own, just-the-way-I-like-it areas. No matter how rough your day has been, we bet you’ll feel the stress dissipate when you get the chance to steal away to your man cave or she shed.

Man Cave Necessities

Typically, the décor in American homes is decided by the woman of the house, and generally guys are okay with letting their wives take the lead here. But that’s probably meant a lot of really great items from your bachelor pad never made into the house. Trophies, bar signs, and poker tables are left stored instead of being enjoyed. That all changes with your man cave! From sports to hunting to cars, anything you love can be included in your space.

To deck out a man cave you’ll really enjoy, choose a theme. Consider how you’ll most commonly use your man cave. If it’s going to be your sports den, show your team colors, your own trophies, or go for all football, bowling, or basketball décor. If you love to tinker in the garage, make it the ultimate workshop and then deck it out with a beer fridge, bar, or tv. If restoring cars is your hobby, go for a racing theme.

While your dream man cave might involve a major overhaul of your garage, basement, or designing your own VersaTube workshop, don’t be afraid to start small if that’s what your budget allows. Empty out a spare bedroom and move in your favorite recliner and a tv, and voilà man cave!

Whatever kind of man cave you opt for, don’t forget one important thing: enough seating for your buddies!

She Shed Essentials

Unlike a man cave, a she shed is nearly always in a separate structure from the main house. Any existing shed can be emptied out and scrubbed clean for this purpose, or you can build a new VersaTube shed for the perfect starting point. New or repurposed, one thing is important for any shed you use: it can’t serve double duty as storage! If her she shed is going to be used for gardening or planting, by all means, incorporate the existing gardening tools. But, gardening tools stored in a yoga she shed or sewing she shed is a big no!

While the guys may not care too much about the aesthetics of their space, the ladies do. From curb appeal to the eye candy inside, it’s an important part of a she shed. Lay a path to the shed with pavers, stones, or gravel. Line the sides of the walk with flowers or shrubs, and add festive twinkle lights, too.

From practical to whimsical, the sky's the limit on how to use a she shed. Make it an art studio, sewing retreat, or book nook. Use it for yoga, prayer and meditation, crafting, or as a quiet getaway. If she loves gardening, add a table, sink, and all the potting tools she could need!

Perfect Tranquility

Now that you know all about man caves and she sheds, we bet you agree that you need one of each! If you’ve already got the space available at your home, jump right in! But if you need a structure to build your dream man cave or she shed (or both), a VersaTube building is a great option. You can build a freestanding garage or workshop for your man cave and one of our utility sheds will make an ideal she shed. Whatever you have in mind, you can fully customize one of our structures so it fits your needs!
