Should I update my garage, or get a new one?

by VersaTube on December 28, 2018

Here at VersaTube, we’ve come across this question a few times. If you’re at the point where your garage doesn’t have enough space, it’s time for action. Don’t let your garage get to the point of no return, where you can barely navigate past piles of boxes, newspapers, sports equipment - or worse, let it sink into a state of disrepair. Thousands of people have this problem, and we can reasonably guess that the majority of them aren’t sure what to do.

So, what can you do to fix this issue? You have a couple of options, including updating your garage or simply getting a new one. You also need to consider that there are a number of important factors, such as how much time and budget you’re willing to allocate to the project. If you have little time or budgetary constraints, you may want to update your garage. However, if you have the time and financial flexibility, building a new garage unit could be the perfect solution.

Here are some of the factors to consider when you’re ready to make your choice:

Time

How much time do you have? If you’re like millions of Americans and work a full-time job, you might not have as much freetime available as, say, a retiree. If you have limited time, then updating your garage is probably more practical than getting a new one. It still costs time, but certainly not as much as a project as comprehensive as building an entirely new structure on your property.

Planning

It takes a bit more planning to build a new garage, and it also takes some planning to renovate it. However, if you simply want to make a few small changes, then updating your garage is probably a better bet.

Purpose

Another essential area worth considering, is the purpose behind your project. Do you need more workspace? Do you want to turn your garage into an entertainment room? Do you need to store hazardous or delicate items? The purpose will help you determine whether to update or to build a new one.

Price

Money doesn’t grow on trees, so price is probably the most important factor in this entire list. In fact, updating your garage can cost even more than you might expect. Of course, it depends on whether you choose to update your garage with complicated or minimal renovations. Throughout the duration of your project, you can expect to pay for labor, permits, materials, wiring, plumbing and anything additional. Yes, these costs are associated with both updating and building a new garage, although the latter tends to have a higher price point.

Space

The amount of space you have available will determine whether you should renovate or build a new garage. Some properties may not have enough space to accommodate a new building. Others could have plenty of land and therefore more room to work with.

Permissions

If you live in a residential neighborhood, building a new garage could be blocked by your neighborhood HOA. If you want to build, you will need to check the guidelines and you may even need to seek permission first. You will also need to look into zoning and make sure that you’re in compliance with local laws. The same is true for renovations, but guidelines covering renovations may be a bit more lax.

If you live further out and aren’t subject to HOA bylaws, you will still need to contact the county about zoning laws in your area.

Value

Renovating or getting a new garage can add significant property value to your home. Larger garages bring even more value to a property, and buyers usually opt for homes with them.
