What is a Seismic Load?
Seismic engineering looks at the application of earthquake generated agitation to a structure. Damages most often occur where the structure touches the ground or another building. International building code includes the calculation of a seismic load.
Seismic load indicates how much seismic energy (waves of energy that travel through the earth) a structure would need to endure in a specific geographic location.
Seismic loads are calculated by considering the following:
- earthquake parameters at the building site
- the type of materials used to create the structure
- the construction quality of a structure
