How do I Protect my Structure from Condensation?

09/09/2016 · HT046

VersaTube structures are pre-engineered to be cost-effective, easy to assemble and customize, as well as very low maintenance.  While this pre-engineering heads off a slew of damaging issues that you might face with a traditional wooden structure, you will still need to be aware of condensation.

Condensation is a concern with steel structures. It can cause moisture build up within the walls and may eventually contribute to mold issues.  One of the best ways to avoid condensation (commonly known as building sweat) is to install a vapor barrier.  Installing insulation in your structure creates a vapor barrier and helps reduce how much condensation is able to form directly on the steel panels of your structure.

Humidity is another concern with steel structures. A concrete foundation that is not fully cured can be a contributing factor to increased humidity and condensation. Steel or metal buildings located in colder climates can experience condensation from exposure to ice and frost. A regular pattern of freezing and thawing can cause frost to melt, drip water and produce condensation.

Placing insulation between the outside sheeting and the framing can help to create a thermal break between outside sheeting and internal framing.  This will help to prevent excess condensation and humidity.
